Are Cut-Thread Tuning Pins Important?

Why are Cut-Thread Tuning Pins on a piano important for musicians
In a piano, cut-thread tuning pins are essential for maintaining the extreme string tension (up to 20 tons) required for a stable and resonant sound. Unlike "rolled" or stamped threads, cut threads are traditionally produced through high-precision lathe processing, which is critical for upright and grand pianos.

For musicians, the importance of cut-thread pins lies in three key areas:
Superior Tuning Stability: Cut-thread pins feature sharp, precise "dummy" threads that act like sharks' teeth. They grip the wood fibers of the pinblock more aggressively than smoother rolled threads, preventing the pins from slipping or "unwinding" under high tension.
Tactile Feedback for Technicians: High-quality pins made of high-carbon steel provide consistent torque (ideally between 180 and 220 psi). This allow technicians to "set" the pin with extreme precision, avoiding the "snappy" or unpredictable jumps that make fine-tuning a piano difficult or impossible.
Consistent Pitch Retention: Because they resist slipping, cut-thread pins help the piano stay in tune for longer periods, even when subjected to heavy playing or minor humidity fluctuations. This ensures that the A440 tuning standard—vital for playing with other musicians—is maintained.
Prevention of "Flagpolling": Dense, well-threaded pins are less likely to "flagpole" (bend or flex) when being turned. This lack of flex ensures that the movement of the technician's tuning hammer translates directly into string tension rather than metal distortion.
