The Viola looks very similar to the violin but slightly larger. It has a lower and deeper sound. The viola has four strings, and is played by drawing a bow across its strings. Refer to the size recommendations for the correct size viola for your student.

The trumpet is a member of the brass family. The student “buzzes” their lips into the mouthpiece to make its sound. This instrument does not require finger dexterity. Fine motor skills and a good ear are required to match pitches.

The trombone is a member of the brass family. Its sound is made by the student “buzzing” their lips into a mouthpiece. Fine motor skills and a good ear are required to match pitches. The trombone plays low sounds and is the foundation for the band.

The Tenor Saxophone is a member of the woodwind family. Its sound is made by a small piece of wood called a reed, which vibrates to make the saxophone sound. This instrument requires good finger dexterity and fine motor skills. It is more difficult to make a sound on the Tenor Saxophone so most students will start on Clarinet or Alto Saxophone before advancing to Tenor Saxophone.

A Percussion Kit includes instruments that are struck to make a musical or percussive sound. Beginning percussion students will learn to play the snare drum, bells (xylophone) or a combination of both. The percussion instrument is the rhythmic base for the entire band.

The Oboe is a type of double reed woodwind instrument that looks like a clarinet. The oboe is played in the treble or soprano range. This instrument requires good finger dexterity and fine motor skills. Sound is produced by blowing into a double reed which is more difficult than a clarinet reed.

The French Horn is a member of the brass family and is made of tubing wrapped into a coil with a flared bell. A musician who plays a horn is known as a horn player or hornist. The student “buzzes” their lips into the mouthpiece to make its sound.

The Flute is a member of the woodwind family. Blowing air across the open hole of the mouthpiece makes its sound. This instrument requires good finger dexterity and fine motor skills. This is the highest sounding instrument in the band and often plays the melody. It is one of the most popular instruments with students.

The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family. The sound comes from a small piece of wood called a reed, which vibrates to make both high and low clarinet sounds. It is relatively easy to make a sound on the clarinet which makes it ideal for students.

The Cello is the bass instrument of the violin family. It has a low and deep sound. The cello has four strings, Refer to our recommended cello sizes to determine the correct size cello for your student.

The Baritone, looks like a small tuba, and makes low to mid-range sounds similar to a trombone. Its flaring conical bore gives the baritone which is also called a euphonium a velvety sound. The sound is made by a student “buzzing” their lips into a mouthpiece, similar to a trombone.

The Alto Saxophone is a member of the woodwind family. Its sound is made by a small piece of wood called a reed, which vibrates to make the saxophone sound. This instrument requires good finger dexterity and fine motor skills. It is relatively easy to make a sound on the Alto Saxophone but most students will start on clarinet before advancing to Alto Saxophone.
