Tenor Sax
The Tenor Saxophone is a member of the woodwind family. Its sound is made by a small piece of wood called a reed, which vibrates to make the saxophone sound. This instrument requires good finger dexterity and fine motor skills. It is more difficult to make a sound on the Tenor Saxophone so most students will start on Clarinet or Alto Saxophone before advancing to Tenor Saxophone.
Oboe
The Oboe is a type of double reed woodwind instrument that looks like a clarinet. The oboe is played in the treble or soprano range. This instrument requires good finger dexterity and fine motor skills. Sound is produced by blowing into a double reed which is more difficult than a clarinet reed.
Flute
The Flute is a member of the woodwind family. Blowing air across the open hole of the mouthpiece makes its sound. This instrument requires good finger dexterity and fine motor skills. This is the highest sounding instrument in the band and often plays the melody. It is one of the most popular instruments with students.
Alto Sax
The Alto Saxophone is a member of the woodwind family. Its sound is made by a small piece of wood called a reed, which vibrates to make the saxophone sound. This instrument requires good finger dexterity and fine motor skills. It is relatively easy to make a sound on the Alto Saxophone but most students will start on clarinet before advancing to Alto Saxophone.
