Risks Of Buying A Used Piano From A Private Party

Buying a used piano from a private seller can carry some significant risks including hidden structural damage, a lack of warranty, and unforeseen additional costs for moving and professional tuning. Unlike reputable piano dealers, private sellers often sell instruments "as-is," meaning any defects discovered after the purchase are your responsibility.

Structural and Mechanical Risks
Pianos have over 10,000 moving parts, and many critical failures are invisible to the untrained eye.
Cracked Soundboard: A crack in this large wooden plate can cause buzzing or a dull tone and is often more expensive to repair than the piano is worth.
Loose Tuning Pins: If the pinblock is worn or cracked, the piano will not hold its pitch, rendering it unplayable and potentially "fatally" damaged.
Action Wear: Repetitive use, humidity fluctuations, and age can cause hammers to become deeply grooved or keys to stick, requiring costly regulation or replacement.
Environmental Damage: Pianos stored in non-climate-controlled areas may suffer from mold growth, which can be a health hazard and difficult to eradicate.
Hidden Logistical Costs
While a private seller's price may initially seem attractive, the total cost often increases due to services typically included by dealers. Also many private seller's have unrealistic expectations as to the real value of that old piano, and frequently those pianos are more expensive than a piano dealer.
Moving Expenses: Pianos are delicate and heavy; hiring professional piano movers is essential to avoid structural damage or personal injury.
Initial Maintenance: A piano that has been neglected for years may require a "pitch raise" and multiple tunings to stabilize, costing significantly more than a standard tuning.
Mandatory Inspection: Experts strongly recommend hiring a Registered Piano Technician (RPT) to evaluate any private sale, adding an upfront cost of roughly $200-300. Of course the technician will want to be paid even if you don't purchase the piano. While this may seem expensive, this inspection could save you from making a big mistake. Naperville Music maintains a network of piano technicians throughout the Chicago area. We would be happy to make a referral to one in your area.
Protection and Safety Concerns
Private sales lack the consumer protections offered by established businesses.
No Warranty or Returns: Most private sales are final. If a major issue is found a month later, you have no recourse for repair or return.
Lack of Financing OptionsDealer Scams: Piano dealers often provide financing at less than market rates, and often with periods of no interest.
Health and Safety: Used pianos can harbor vermin infestations, mouse droppings, or even illegal pest-control poisons like arsenic from older eras.
To mitigate these risks, always obtain the serial number to verify the piano's age and history before visiting in person.
At Naperville Music, our technicians inspect, adjust and tune every piano before we make it available for sale. During this inspection we put the piano it top playing condition.
