Should I Care About the Quality of the Wool Felt on a Piano Hammer

Yes, the quality of the wool felt on a piano hammer is arguably the single most important factor in the instrument’s "voice." While the wood core provides the structure, the felt is the point of contact with the string—it is the "vocal cords" of the piano.

High-quality wool felt on a piano hammer is usually sourced from specific breeds of sheep (like Merino) and processed using traditional methods to maintain the fiber's natural elasticity. For musicians, this translates into several critical performance benefits:
Tonal Versatility (The "Color" Palette): Premium felt is long-fibered and high-density. This allows a technician to "voice" the piano—using needles to soften or hardening the felt—to achieve a massive range of colors. A musician can then produce a dark, brooding tone when playing softly and a brilliant, soaring tone when playing loudly.
Elasticity and "Rebound": Quality wool is naturally resilient. When the hammer strikes the string, it needs to compress and then immediately "bounce" away. If the felt is cheap or "dead," it stays in contact with the string too long, dampening the vibration and killing the sustain. High-quality felt ensures a clean, crisp strike.
Dynamic Range: A high-grade felt is "interlocked" during the felt-making process without the use of excessive chemical glues. This natural interlocking allows the hammer to store energy. For the musician, this means the piano won't "bottom out" or sound harsh when pushed to maximum volume.
Consistency Across the Keyboard: Cheap felt often has inconsistent density, leading to a "patchy" sound where one note is bright and the next is dull. Premium wool ensures a smooth, seamless transition from the deep bass to the crystalline treble.
Durability and Resistance to "Grooving": Pianos are under immense stress. Lower-quality felt will develop deep grooves from the strings quickly, leading to a thin, metallic sound. High-resilience wool felt holds its shape longer, maintaining the piano's "sweet spot" for many years of practice.
The "Cold-Pressed" vs. "Hot-Pressed" Distinction
While opinions vary, some musicians prefer cold-pressed felt. In this process, the felt is not subjected to high heat or chemicals to shape it. This preserves the natural lanolin and "spring" of the wool fibers, providing a more organic, "singing" tone compared to the more brittle sound of hot-pressed hammers, but the process may change from model to model based on the overall design.
Ritmuller and Pearl River Pianos, and most other respected piano brands use only high quality wool felt on their piano hammers, assuring the best performance for the player.
