Yamaha B Series Upright Pianos: An In-Depth Overview

The post highlights the differences between the three models in the B Series of Yamaha pianos.

Manufacturing and Design Philosophy

The Yamaha B Series upright pianos (b1, b2, b3) are all based on the renowned Yamaha U Series design standards. While the initial development and design occur in Japan, production takes place in Indonesia to ensure affordability while upholding Yamaha’s quality standards. Key features across all B Series models include:

·         V-Pro vacuum-shield cast-iron frames, providing strength, lightness, and exceptional stability.

·         Aluminum action rails, which prevent warping due to humidity and temperature fluctuations.

·         Balanced actions that deliver even key travel, promoting a consistent touch and long-lasting performance.

·         Hand-wound bass strings and specially designed hammers, each tailored to the piano’s scale for optimal responsiveness.

These characteristics are present in every B Series piano, ensuring excellent craftsmanship at accessible price points.

Soundboard and Acoustic Performance

·         b1: Features a laminated spruce soundboard, offering clarity though with less resonance compared to higher models.

·         b2 & b3: Equipped with solid spruce soundboards with reinforced crowns for greater resonance and projection.

·         Back post construction varies: the b1 and b2 have four back posts each, while the b3 has five, enhancing structural support and tonal depth.

·         As the piano height increases—109 cm (b1), 113 cm (b2), 121 cm (b3)—so does the richness and depth of the sound, thanks to longer strings and larger soundboards.

Dimensions and Resonance Comparison

·         b1: Approximately 109 cm tall. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller spaces or those new to playing piano.

·         b2: Stands about 113 cm tall, offering a noticeable improvement in resonance—often referred to as the “Goldilocks” size for being well-balanced.

·         b3: At about 121 cm, the b3 approaches the tonal quality of professional uprights. Its larger size results in more overtones and sustained vibration, delivering a fuller acoustic experience.

Silent Piano™ Technology (SC Series)

All B Series models can be equipped with Silent Piano™ technology (SC2 or the newer SC3 units). This system:

·         Mechanically silences the strings and captures key movement via optical sensors to produce digital sound.

·         Enables headphone use with sampled tones from Yamaha’s CFX or Bösendorfer Imperial grand pianos, regardless of model size.

·         Includes wireless app integration through Yamaha’s Smart Pianist, supporting voice selection, digital sheet music, recording, and even custom tuning per key.

Finishes and Aesthetic Options

Initially, B Series pianos were available only in polished ebony. Since 2014, Yamaha has expanded finish options to include polished mahogany and American walnut, with other variants such as white finishes available depending on region. This range allows buyers to select a piano that matches their home’s decor.
